Hokanji Temple is a temple of the Rinzai sect known for its five-story pagoda called Yasaka-to (Important Cultural Property).
It is said to have a very old history and was founded by Prince Shotoku in the Asuka Period.
However, numerous disasters devastated most of the temple, and all that remains today is the five-story pagoda, which was rebuilt by Ashikaga Yoshinori in 1440.
From the upper floor of the pagoda, which is reached by a narrow staircase, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Higashiyama area.
