It is located in the center of Kyoto city and covers an area of about 650,000 square meters.

It used to be lined with the residences of the imperial family and court nobles, but now it is covered with gravel and is a popular place of relaxation for the citizens of Kyoto.

In April 2006, the ruins of the Sekiin Residence, the only official Address in the park, were opened to the public.
