Nishi Honganji Temple is the head temple of the Honganji School of Jodo Shinshu. Its official name is Ryukokuzan Honganji Temple. It is also called “Onishi-san” by the local people of Kyoto.

Nishi Honganji Temple

After the separation of Higashi-Honganji, both schools became commonly known by different names to distinguish them from each other.

In 1272, Shinran’s youngest daughter built a mausoleum in Higashiyama Otani, and it was moved to its current location by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1591.
