Kyō-ō-gokoku-ji Temple in Kyoto is also known as the much easier to say Tō-Ji Temple and is famed for its striking five-storied pagoda.
It’s the tallest pagoda in Japan at 55m and is a national treasure.
In 823, Kukai (Kobo Daishi) was granted by Emperor Saga and became the main dojo of the Shingon sect.
Although most of To-ji Temple was destroyed during war, it was rebuilt in the Edo period, and it still retains many of its original characteristics.
On the 21st of every month, the “Kobo Market” is held, where various antiques are lined up in the precincts and you can enjoy the old-fashioned scenery.
