Kyoto Tower is an observation tower that stands in front of the Karasuma Exit of JR Kyoto Station. It is the tallest structure in the city, standing 131 m (660 ft) tall including the base building (Kyoto Tower Building).
It is also listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s tallest non-steel-framed building.
The tower’s image is designed to resemble a lighthouse with the cityscape as the sea. It is also called the “Candle of the East” because of its color and shape and the fact that the Higashi Honganji Temple is located nearby.
The observatory is famous for its night view, and is also popular when lit up.
The mascot character “Tawawa-chan” who appears at events is also popular and goods are sold.
